The Democracy of Oaks

A ‘semi-staged, rehearsed reading’ of The Democracy of Oaks, Adrian Drew’s acclaimed play about Walt Whitman and Edward Carpenter, will be staged at the Fan Museum in Greenwich on Friday 10 October.

Whitman&CarpenterThe play – described as ‘a theatrical tour de force’ – explores a meeting in 1877 between Carpenter, a young man from Britain, and his idol, the legendary US poet, at Whitman’s home in Camden, New Jersey.

It was an encounter between two fascinating individuals which had far-reaching effects on both men, and on history too. Both went on to influence the thinking of a number of early ILPers, including Katharine Bruce Glasier.

The two-and-a-half hour play is directed by the author and stars TV actors Andrew Squires, as Carpenter, and Gary Richards, as Whitman. It starts at 7.30pm and admission includes entry to the museum’s latest exhibition, plus wine and light refreshments.
