The Party, the Politics, the Movement

The relationship between the Co-operative Party and the wider co-op movement in the wake of this year’s general election will be at the heart of debate at this year’s Co-operative Party conference in London on Saturday 19 September.

“The results of both the general election and the Keep it Co-op campaign present important questions for us to consider,’ says the Co-operative Party website. “We’ll look at how we can continue to develop and reinvigorate the party’s links with the wider movement, grow our membership and build our skills and capacity.

“Party delegates and visitors will be joined by some of our leading politicians and figures from the wider co-operative movement to build the party and share skills and experience.”

As well as the usual keynote speeches from Labour and Co-operative politicians, policy debates and fringes, the conference this year will include training workshops for everyone from new members to experienced officers on everything from developing local co-operative campaigns, standing for election, digital campaigning and supporting co-operative politics in local government.

The conference will also launch the party’s networks for co-operative councillors and black and minority ethnic members while conference motions will focus on reviews of the party’s member-led policy process and priorities for the year ahead.
