Taking Sides in the Spanish Civil War

The role of artists and writers in the Spanish Civil War will be the focus of next year’s Len Crome Memorial conference in Manchester on 1 March.

Examining photography, journalism, art and cinema, the one-day event will bring Len Crome leaflettogether experts from around Europe to focus on the way the civil war, and the International Brigades in particular, were represented in words and images both at the time and in more recent years.

Carl-Henrik Bjerstrom will talk about republican education and the arts, while Dr Carmen Herrero looks at the International Brigades on film. Jane Rogowska will turn the lens on war photographers such as Gerda Taro and Robert Capa while Professor Paul Preston goes beneath the headlines in his talk on foreign correspondents.

Organised by the International Brigades Memorial Trust, the event will be held on Saturday 1 March at the Manchester Conference Centre.

Tickets can be booked in advance for £10 or entry on the day costs £12. Coffee and a buffet can be added for £25, if booked by 1 February,  while coffee, buffet and evening meal costs £45 per person.
