Trickett to Address Radical Hope Conference

Labour MP Jon Trickett will address the ILP’s conference on The Politics of Radical Hope and the Labour Party in Leeds tomorrow (Saturday 19 September).

Compass Radical Hope NEWThe  MP for Hemsworth, who was recently made Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, as well as Shadow Minister for the Constitutional Convention, will open the one-day meeting jointly organised by the ILP and campaigning pressure group Compass to examine the future of the Labour Party and the politics of radical hope.

The meeting is taking place just one week after Corbyn’s decisive election victory in the Labour leadership race, and four months on from the party’s disastrous defeat at the general election.

The day will focus on the implications of the both these events for Labour’s future, and that of radical politics more widely.

Neal Lawson from Compass will lead a discussion based on his pamphlet, Downfall: Is Labour dead and how can radical hope be rebuilt? available to download from the Compass website.

Neal’s contribution will be followed by a panel discussion with Sarah Perrigo, formerly of the Peace Studies Department at Bradford University, and Barry Winter of the ILP.

The afternoon session will focus on how we might rebuild the Labour Party with particular emphasis on its relationship to radical social and protest movements, with a leading address from Sue Goss, author of Open Tribe, followed by breakout sessions and wider discussion.

There will be lots of opportunities for debate and contributions from all conference participants.

The meeting will start at 10.15am with tea and coffee and finish at 4pm.

The seminar takes place at the Rose Bowl, Leeds Beckett University, room 408. This is a modern venue with easy access for travel by train and car. Rose Bowl, Portland Crescent, Leeds, LS1 3HB.

The event is free but you do need to register in advance. Please contact us at: info@independentlabour.org.uk or 07799 502 937.

A most interesting and heartening conference in a beautiful setting with an excellent lunch. It was especially good to meet so many people of like mind but also varied and interesting ideas. Thank you for organising it!
