Opposing World War One

Peace and anti-war movements prior to World War One will be the focus of attention at the 2013 Peace History Conference to be held in Manchester on 20 and 21 September.

Peace conf flyerFormer war reporter and independent MP Martin Bell will be one of the main speakers at Friends Meeting House on Mount Street. Bell is vice president of the Movement for the Abolition of War and he will open the conference on Saturday 21 to be followed by talks on a range of subjects, including individual campaigners such as anti-war ILPer Isabella Ford, presented by June Hannam.

There will also be a panel discussion on lessons for today from the pre-war  peace movement featuring CND general secretary Kate Hudson.

Participants can also join the Manchester Peace and Justice Trail on Friday afternoon and watch a film called ‘Peace and Conflict’ marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer Benjamin Britten.

The conference is the first of a number planned to examine the impact of peace and anti-war movements on public perceptions and government policy before and during the First World War, and over the following century.

Registration fees are £20, or £5 for students, unemployed and retired people.
